ArtsAs is the custom with Shaolin, the late Grandmaster Frederick encouraged many arts outside the school, music, poetry, crafts and in his memory we have left a selection of his favourite stories, koans and students writings, along with some of his own work, on the website and hope that everyone who reads these enjoys them. Arts such as poetry, drawing and music are also encouraged as part of the continuing development of the individual, (physically, mentally, spiritually) as is academic achievement. Our Late Grandmaster and some students have written Koans; which are often an indication of a Shaolin's spiritual attainment and mental state. Click the items below to read more. Koans What is a Koan? A Koan is a short story or a metaphysical poem which expresses a moment of Shang Chi; i.e. a moment of enlightenment, but it may also shed enlightenment on a point of life and existence itself, often explaining the right and wrong and morals of everyday life and often leading one onto a higher level of thought and consciousness. Shang Chi is also a blessing, for to wish one a moment of enlightenment is to wish them a blessing from Buddha himself.
